SC READY Proficiency by Per Pupil Expenditures

The above dashboard compares SC READY performance with Per Pupil Expenditure (PPE), which is the amount of dollars spent per pupil. Each district/school is represented by a circle, with color representing the percentage of pupils in poverty and size representing the school's size. A purple district/school represents a higher percentage of pupils in poverty, while a light blue district/school represents a lower percentage of pupils in poverty. For more information about how these percentages are calculated, view the Data Notes below. For troubleshooting, view the Troubleshooting section at the bottom of the page.

The vertical line (top to bottom) represents the average PPE. Districts/schools to the left of the vertical line spend less than average, while districts/schools to the right spend above average. The horizontal line (left to right) represents the total percent of student SC READY (English Language Arts and Mathematics) tests that were scored Meets Expectations or Exceeds Expectations (ME). Districts/schools above the horizontal line had a higher percentage of ME tests than the statewide percentage, while districts/schools below the line had a lower percentage of ME tests than the statewide percentage.

The default view shows a scatterplot of districts. This is indicated by a darker highlight and the words "District" and "Show Schools." If you are looking for a specific district, use the District Spotlight to highlight it.

For a comparison of schools, click "Show Schools." This shows a scatterplot of schools, with options to filter by district or highlight a district or school. In this view, to look at a school district individually, click the dropdown below “Filter by District” and select a district from the dropdown. This will allow you to see how schools compare within a district and with the state, as the vertical and horizontal lines will still reflect statewide averages.

Data Notes

  • 2023 represents the latest year of available audited financial data provided by the SC Dept. of Education. This dashboard will be updated as soon as more recent audited financials are available.
  • School size is based on a school's reported 135-day enrollment.
  • Pupils in poverty and 135-day enrollment can be found in the 2023 Report Card files. Because financial data lags a year behind (due to audits), Per Pupil Expenditure is found in the 2024 Report Card files in the "Curr_Yr" field.
  • Per Pupil Expenditure (PPE) is a result of total revenue received by the school from all funding sources (federal, local, and state) excluding debt service, capital projects, and pupil activity. Per Pupil Expenditure at the district represents the combined total of schools in the district. Schools and districts not reporting financial data will not appear on the dashboard. In districts where a subset of schools did not report financial data, the district PPE is reported as the sum of those that did report financial data.
  • In the 2020-21 school year, statewide test participation rates were less consistent than is typical.
  • Schools and districts not reporting financial data, SC READY performance, or 135-day enrollment are not included in the above scatterplots.
  • If less than 20 students were tested at the district/school, the district/school is suppressed from view and will not be shown.

Troubleshooting

  • Data can be downloaded by clicking the download symbol and choosing between crosstab (pdf/excel) and pdf. If downloading crosstab, you will most likely want to download the data file that includes the word "Scatterplot." You will likely need to scroll within the dashboard frame to see all options.
  • If experiencing sizing issues, please try adjusting your browser's zoom level and refreshing the page.
  • If experiencing issues in tablet or mobile view, click the “Aa” next to the URL in the upper left-hand corner and request mobile version. You will need to refresh the page for the changes to go into effect.
  • Additionally, if unable to scroll in tablet view or mobile view, try scrolling in the margins to the left or right of the dashboard border.
